After finishing a BA in Theater Directing from SUNY -Brockport, I changed my focus to video and film. My first student project at San Diego City College was a short film about Sugar and Muscle Testing. My second film was a biographical portrait of the acclaimed writer Ursula Molinaro, featuring a mesmerizing reading from her book Nightschool for Saints. I was then hired as an editor at a video production company in Honolulu. There I had the opportunity to produce The Volcanoes of Hawai`i which aired on the Discovery Channel.
In 1990, I teamed up with Sara Banks and we produced Out in Paradise, a documentary about lesbians in Hawai`i. OIP was awarded Best Film at the Honolulu Rainbow Film festival and it was the beginning of a 5 year partnership focusing mostly on the queer communities of Hawai`i. In 1995 Love and Marriage- a documentary about same sex marriage won the top honors at the Rainbow Film Festival and also screened at the prestigious Hawai'i International Film Festival. We produced several AIDS educational videos and found sponsors for a gay TV series - Out and About that aired every Sunday night on O'lelo - the public access channel for Oahu. Our commercial clients included Hilton Hawaiian Village, Crazy Shirts and the University of Hawai'i.
I then was offered a job as a Media Specialist at the Maui campus of the University of Hawai'i. I worked there for almost 10 years producing and teaching. Digital media was still very new so I created a continuing education program that offered classes in videography, editing and sound. I also wrote a grant to produce On Maui, a local news show, since the only TV news was Honolulu based. One of my favorite projects was Preserving Our Recollections, interviews with over 100 diverse Maui old timers sharing their unique life stories.
I am retired now, however the creative spring is being renewed. I want to continue documenting elders. There are so many unique stories to be shared. If you want to preserve your legacy or the memories of your family and friends please contact me. I also love filming live music events and am pursuing connections in that arena.
